Sky - Service app

To launch quickly and learn fast, the business adopted a hybrid app strategy to take existing responsive web pages and repurpose them inside an app. This route was taken in consolation with the product owner and the development team as the most suitable approach given the project goal and timelines.

The app team created mood boards and a series of visual concepts for the app's home screen which would link into a set of repurposed responsive web pages. My work included outlining the customer journeys for PIN, profile management, account settings and payment functions.

The aim was to create an experience that was mindful of the HCI guidelines from iOS and Android whilst retaining alignment with Sky's own brand guidelines and internal toolkit for digital deliverables.

Yell - Windows Phone app

I was responsible for designing Yell's Windows Phone app from the ground up, creating the full set of user journeys, interaction patterns and wireframes for each screen. I wanted the app to fully reflect the Metro (now Windows UI) guidelines rather than just port the company's existing iOS app to the platform.

My design focus was on simplicity; ensuring the app's core function was resolutely clear and easily accessible. To achieve this I defined a persistent search function across all top level screens, which differed to early proposals featuring 'search' on just one screen.

I worked closely with a visual designer to develop a 'light' and 'dark' skin for the app and was embedded into the development team during build to ensure the interactions, transitions and screen flows mirrored the intended customer experience.

The app included a unique ability to search for multiple types of business in sequence to view locations on a map - for example a customer might seek MoT centres close to coffee shops, so as to be able to grab a bite to eat while their car was being repaired.

The app was selected by Microsoft for promotion in their store and currently has an 80% rating.

Yell mobile app iOS

I worked on several releases of Yell's iOS app to introduce new functionality, allowing customers to access new content such as photos, videos, opening hours and an enhanced map view on their mobile and tablet devices.

I spearheaded work to define which search icon categories should be displayed, and was able to show increased engagement when these were based on popular search terms. Interestingly, testing showed if too many categories were displayed, this resulted in the main search function being overlooked, as customers came away with the perception they could only search amongst the pre-displayed categories.

I worked with visual design to devise a format with a clearer distinguish between search and shortcuts, and introduced a new process enabling customers to create their own category shortcuts.

Yell mClub loyalty app

Working in an agile development environment, I used rapid prototyping techniques and paper sketching to quickly form the basis of an app that could be built.

The app was part of a small scale trial to test whether Yell could leverage their position as marketeer for small and medium sized businesses, and help these businesses encourage repeat visits from customers.

I was responsible for creating the in-app experience and the merchant dashboard which allowed businesses to create reward schemes and monitor their success.

Scanning a QR code was central to the app's functionality, and I worked with product and visual design to work through challenges involved in ensuring this was a quick and responsive process for customers to follow.
